We are not an organization and neither are we an institution nor are we attached to any institution for that matter. We are but just an individual with this special passion for plants especially those with medicinal value.

Dr. Abdul Ghani bin Hussain graduated from the Cairo University in Egypt with a degree in Medicine in 1977. Upon his return to Malaysia he served the government initially as a house officer at the General Hospital in Kuala Lumpur. He joined the Surgical Department of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as a Trainee Lecturer and stayed on until end of 1981. He then became a registrar in Surgery and Anaesthesia at Bukit Mertajam Hospital before deciding to leave government service and joined the private sector. He went into a partnership with an established medical practice in Petaling Jaya until end of 1984. At that point he decided to establish his own practice in Pulau Langkawi. In October 2006 he decided to lay off active clinical practice to concentrate on his research on Traditional Malay Medicine and Islamic Medicine.

He came to Langkawi at a time when the wheels of development was just begining. On the first day he set foot on Langkawi, they were just surfacing the big roundabout at Simpang Empat Padang Lalang. The weather then was more uniform than it is today. It was less hot and there were abundant rain through out the year. The forest was luscious and green and teeming with animal life. One can see plenty of frogs crossing the narrow roads at the sight of light from a vehicle at night and the floating flickers of fireflies over the padi fields. Today we hardly can find them. The frogs and the fireflies has suffered much from the invasion of the iron creatures that have moved and changed the landscape of Langkawi. They could not survive this invasion and slowly went into oblivion.

He has seen changes made by these mechanical creations of Man. It not only affected the environment but it has also created a new breed of people in Langkawi. But then that is beside the point.

The loss of much of the Langkawi's biodivesities to the wheels of development cannot be totally ignored. This he has noted during many of his excursions into the rainforest to forage for medicinal plants. He was saddened when one individual wrongly invaded his land and destroyed the array of plants he had preserved in his two and a quarter acre of land in Kampong Kuah. From a lush greenery he preserved, it had been turned into what is displayed below.

This has started him on a plight to preserve the Langkawi biodiversity collecting and documenting the plants found on the islands. To facilitate his effort he had used the expertise of his close acquaintances in Langkawi who are very well verse with the forest and the sea around. He has recorded the plants initially on film and now on digitized media. Along the way he had purchased two boats to take him on to the other islands to record the plants there in.

Such effort was done in between his active clinical practice on the island. As of end of October 2006 he decided to concentrate fully on this little which goes well hand in hand with his other research which is the study of Traditional Malay Medicine and Islamic Medicine and the Materia Medica.

To help sustain his family and his research he embarked on a venture which take tourists to Langkawi on various excursions pertaining to his work. It is hope that with the success of this little venture he would not need to lobby for grants from any institutions. However, he would welcome any institutions whether within Malaysia or Internationally that might be interested in providing any funds for his little effort.

This website in no way is an official website for the Flora of Langkawi but more an individual effort to let the world into the Plant Kingdom of Langkawi. Here he hopes to present most of the plants in full perspective of a flora. This definitely will be a life long effort and for as long as Allah allows him to this he will deligently write on His creations in Langkawi.

Wa Alaikum Salaam
